UPS: United Parcel Service delivery tracking

Understanding UPS tracking numbers

What is a UPS tracking number?

A UPS tracking number is a unique identification code that UPS assigns to each package immediately before it is shipped. It allows the sender to track the location of their package and its progress.

Where to find tracking numbers

To track UPS packages, use the tracking number on the official website or in the UPS mobile app to get up-to-date information on the status and location of your shipment.

Tracking number formats

UPS tracking numbers are 18 characters long in standard form, beginning with the universal prefix "1Z". This prefix is followed by a 6-digit shipper code, a 2-digit service code indicating the selected delivery type, and a unique number for each package.

An example of such a tracking number looks like "1Z 9Y8 646 01 1025 5307", where "9Y8 646" is the shipper code, "01" is the service code that determines the type of delivery (for example, standard or express delivery), and "1025 5307" is a unique identifier for the package.

What to do if you don’t have a tracking number

There are ways to track packages without a tracking number. UPS (MyChoice), FedEx (Delivery Manager), and USPS (Informed Delivery) all offer a program you can sign up for that will allow you to see, track, and customize deliveries to your home address. No tracking number is required.

UPS usually sends a confirmation email with a tracking number. So, you can check your inbox. You can also contact the seller, company, or person who sent you the package. They should be able to provide you with a tracking number or other details.

Handling lost tracking numbers

If you’ve lost your UPS tracking number, you can:

  • check your email;

  • use UPS My Choice;

  • contact the sender;

  • search with shipment details;

  • call UPS customer service (1-800-742-5877);

  • visit a UPS location.

These steps should help you locate your tracking number or track your package.

Using redelivery numbers

On regular UPS delivery days, UPS may make up to three delivery attempts at your address at its sole discretion. After the last attempt, undeliverable packages will be returned to the sender. To prevent a package return or to arrange for alternative delivery, track your package.

Shipping tips and best practices

  1. Packaging guidelines

Use strong boxes and protective materials (bubble wrap, packing paper) to pack your parcel. This is necessary to protect the goods. Make sure the packaging size matches the parcel size and the weight does not exceed the limits for the selected service. Check if you are sending prohibited goods.

  1. Labeling and documentation

Each parcel must be properly labelled with full details of the sender and recipient. For international shipments, you must have a customs declaration and relevant documents (invoice, certificate of origin). Depending on the type of goods, you may need special permits or certificates.

  1. Customs documentation for international shipping

In most cases, when ordering anything through UPS, you only pay for the cost of the product and the delivery service. Once the shipment arrives, the delivery service's authority is fulfilled, and the fate of the package depends entirely on you. Upon arrival at the customs checkpoint, your shipment must go through several stages of registration, and if its value exceeds 150 euros, you are required to clear it. You have 30 days to do this, otherwise, your package will be sent back at your expense.
